Her interest in photography\u00a0began\u00a0in 1970. In the\u00a01980s, she started managing photographic projects created in partnership with Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado, who has now been her partner for almost 60 years, and she initiated the conception and design of the majority of the books and all the exhibitions those projects originated. In the late 1990s, in the Atlantic Forest region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, L\u00e9lia e Sebasti\u00e3o created\u00a0Instituto\u00a0Terra, an NGO dedicated to reforestation, and environmental conservation and education. This institution has already planted nearly 3 million trees, and it has become a worldwide reference in terms of ecosystem restoration and environmental rehabilitation and preservation.
