It was with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Murmuring Coast<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1988), a reflection on the reality of colonial war in Africa, that she made a name for herself in Portuguese literature. Many of her other works contributed to make her one of Europe\u2019s most renowned authors. Novels such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Painter of Birds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1998) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Whistling in the Cranes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2002) earned her the highest accolades in Portugal, such as the PEN Club Prize for Fiction, the D.Dinis award from Casa de Mateus, and the Grand Prize for Novels from the Portuguese Writers\u2019 Association. Her works have been published in numerous languages. International awards earned for her work include the Jean Monet Prize for European Writer of the Year 2000; the first edition of the G\u00fcnter Grass Foundation\u2019s Albatross Prize for her oeuvre; the Premio Luso-Espa\u00f1ol de Arte y Cultura in 2015; and the FIL Literary Award in Romance Languages in Guadalajara, 2020. In 2014, she published <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Os Memor\u00e1veis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in 2018, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estu\u00e1rio<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a novel about Earth&#8217;s vulnerability. These were followed by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O Livro das Tr\u00e9guas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (poetry, 2019) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Em Todos os Sentidos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (non-fiction, 2020).
