Dulce Maria Cardoso
Dulce Maria Cardoso has published the novels Eliete (2018, acknowledged as book of the year by newspapers such as Público, Expresso, JL, winner of the Oceanos Prize and shortlisted for Prix Femina), The Return (2011, winner of the Special Critics’ Prize and deemed book of the year by Público and Expresso), O Chão dos Pardais (2009, Portuguese PEN Club Prize and Ciranda Prize), Os Meus Sentimentos (2005, European Union Prize for Literature), and Campo de Sangue (2001, Acontece Prize, written as the result of a Literary Creation Grant awarded by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture). Her novels have been translated into several languages and published in over twenty countries. The English translation of O Retorno (The Return) earned the PEN Translates Award in 2016. She has published short stories in magazines and newspapers, most of which are collected in the anthologies Até Nós (2008) and Tudo São Histórias de Amor (2013). Some of them are included in various foreign anthologies and “Anjos por dentro” was included in the Best European Fiction 2012 anthology published by Dalkey Archive Press. Her texts Rosas wer published in 2017, written during Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s stay in Lisbon as Artist in the City. She also created the character Lôá, the girl-God, for a TV series broadcast on RTP2. Dulce Maria Cardoso’s work is studied in universities in several countries and is part of several academic curricula. It has been the subject of various academic theses and has been adapted into film, theater and television. The author has participated in several prestigious international festivals. In 2012, she was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. She writes the column “Autobiografia não autorizada” for Visão magazine (collected in book form in 2021) and is a member of the panel of the “Original é a Cultura” program on Portuguese TV station SIC.
